I have decided to use the latest version of Ubuntu (13.10) as our Linux OS. Xilinx always tells us they don't support Ubuntu, but I have been using Ubuntu to run Xilinx software tools since 2007 without major problem. Let's go to the Ubuntu download site:
We will download the 64-bit version in the form of an "iso image" file.
To install Ubuntu we have to start VirtualBox.
To start the installation press the Start button and select the iso file we just downloaded.
Click Start and after a short time this window pops up. We choose "Install Ubuntu".
Make sure you meet these requirements.
The virtual machine hard drive will be erased and then Ubuntu will be installed.
Tell where you are and who you are and a few other things
and the installation starts.
The installation takes less than 30 minutes.
After restart and login this window is displayed. Ubuntu is up and running.
VisualBox Settings
Here are the settings I use. I have marked the "Show at Top of Screen" to move the VirtualBox menus to the top of the screen.
